WELCOME

The Diablo Valley Literacy Council is an all-volunteer organization, and each volunteer is vitally important to the success of our mission. We currently have over 100 active tutors, but we also have a waiting list of about 50 people who want to learn English.

Who Are Our Students?

  • Just over 1/4 of Californians were born in another country
  • 4 in 10 speak a foreign language at home
  • 3 million over the age of 5 cannot communicate well in English
  • 44% come from Mexico
  • 34% come from Asia
  • 10% come from Latin American countries
  • We have helped people from over 40 countries

Become a Volunteer!
If you can read and write English, like people, and have 1 to 2 hours a week, you can become a volunteer. We provide training, teaching materials, and mentors to assist you in this important work.

Training Workshop
Training workshops are held twice a year to train tutors in the Laubach method of teaching ESL (English as a Second Language). Once the workshop has been completed, a student will be assigned to the tutor and weekly lessons begin. Materials appropriate to the student's level of ability are available to all tutors.
