Presidents Message

Happy New Year!

We hope you enjoy the photos of our Holiday Party. We all had a great time. I want to say thank you to everyone who volunteered so many hours and ideas to make our organization better in 2005. The Board of Directors, workshop volunteers, non-tutoring volunteers, each and every tutor and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church deserve to be recognized and commended for helping our students and our community.

Please be sure to join us at our Annual Meeting to meet and elect your Board of Directors. We look forward to an exciting 2006!

Kris Torske

The Diablo Valley Literacy Council celebrated its annual holiday potluck luncheon on December 3 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Over 120 tutors, students and their families came together to share a multi-cultural feast of homemade delicacies from many countries. Children of all ages were entertained with games while their parents enjoyed meeting other students and tutors and sharing stories.

Among the guests was now mayor of Concord, Susan Bonilla, who thanked the newcomers for enriching the community, the tutors for giving the gift of English, the many hands who helped organize the luncheon and Literacy Board for its valuable work year round.

Last to arrive was Santa Claus (sometimes known as Bill Ghirardelli), who delighted the surprised children with gifts of books. A fun time was had by all!

We Want to Talk About DVLC!

We would like to get out in to the community more and talk about our program. Volunteer Judy Bradford has put together a terrific PowerPoint presentation about DVLC and Literacy.

If you belong to other groups or know of a group that would like to have someone come to talk to them about our training and our organization, wed love to arrange it. The more people that hear about us the better! So call us at 685-3881 for more information or to schedule a presentation.

Help us Find Missing Utensils

At our Holiday Party several people lost some of the utensils they brought to serve their special food. So if you could please take a minute 1to double check your cupboards to check for orphan serving pieces and ask your students if maybe they have a piece that unexpectedly went home with them.

We are looking for 2 different pie servers and a serving spoon. They were beloved by their owners who would be very grateful to get them back. You can just drop them off at the church office or call and leave a message at 685-3881 to have someone pick it up. Thanks for your help.
